Nepal visit

CES Team members are back in Nepal presenting three research studies.

In August 2024, Ursula Renold, Patrick McDonald and Borja Pérez-Viana visited Nepal to take part in events and projects key to the future of TVET in the country, which is undergoing a deep transformation as part of its federalisation process.
CES and the Kathmandu University School of Education (the ceSoed consortium) provide backstopping and learning to the Quality Technical and Vocational Education for Youth (QualiTY) project, an SDC-financed initiative to improve the quality and attractiveness of the TVET system, implemented by the Government of Nepal with technical support from Swisscontact. As part of its involvement, ceSoed, alongside other project stakeholders, visited schools across Sudurpaschim and Lumbini provinces to learn about the challenges faced by schools and the support they received from the project. The lessons from the trip will inform our further research on the quality of TVET schools.

The team shared the findings from recent research on the federalisation process of Nepal, the benefits of dual TVET in Nepal and the state of the Nepalese TVET school system in several fora, which featured school principals, high-level officials and industry representatives. Chief among these events was the National Seminar on Education and Employment Linkage, held on the 29th of August and broadcasted live. The seminar was organised by the CNI—the leading industry organisation of Nepal—and benefited from the participation of political representatives at the highest level, including the current and former Ministers of Education and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education. The keynote presentation was delivered by Prof. Renold, who emphasised the benefits of the involvement of the private sector in TVET governance and proposed a way forward to accomplish it. During the Q&A that closed the event, Prof. Renold expressed her optimism for the future of TVET in Nepal and pointed out that the seminar was a crucial milestone in the process of increasing industry engagement, which was very limited when she first started working in Nepal seven year ago. The seminar also featured presentations by other member of the ceSoed team, Dr McDonald and Dr Pérez-Viana from CES and Dr Prakash Paudel from KUSOED, during its technical sessions.
